What is a Web3 TLD?

A top-level domain (TLD) is the extension at the end of a web address — like .com, .org, or .net. Traditionally, these are controlled by ICANN and cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to create.

Web3 TLDs are registered on the Handshake blockchain — a decentralized, permissionless naming protocol. Anyone can own a TLD for a fraction of the cost, with no middlemen and no renewal fees.

What Can I Do With a TLD?

  • 🌐 Host decentralized websites under your TLD
  • 💰 Sell second-level domains (e.g. sell alice.yourtld, bob.yourtld)
  • 💸 Earn royalties — 50% of every domain sale under your TLD
  • 🔑 Use as crypto wallet address — receive any cryptocurrency
  • 📧 Decentralized identity — your Web3 username across platforms
  • 🛡 Censorship resistant — no authority can take it down

How Does Registration Work?

TLDs on Handshake are allocated through a Vickrey auction system — a sealed-bid auction where the winner pays the second-highest bid price. This ensures fair market pricing.

On TDLNoot, we handle the entire auction process for you. You pay in USD or crypto, and we bid on your behalf using HNS (Handshake coins). Once you win, the TLD is yours forever on-chain.

Day 0 — You register, we open the auction
Day 5 — Bidding phase opens (2 weeks)
Day 19 — Reveal phase (10 days)
Day 29 — TLD is yours forever ✅

How Do I Use My TLD in a Browser?

Handshake TLDs don't resolve in regular browsers by default — they require a Handshake-aware DNS resolver. There are several easy options:

  • 🔌 NextDNS — Enable "Resolve Handshake domains" in settings
  • 🌍 HDNS.io — Free public resolver, just change your DNS settings
  • 🧩 Browser Extension — Install our resolver extension (coming soon)
  • 🔗 HNS.to Gateway — Access any HNS domain via hns.to/yourdomain.tld

What is the Royalty System?

When you own a TLD, you become a mini-registrar. Anyone who buys a second-level domain under your TLD generates revenue — and you get 50% of every sale.

For example: if you own .noot and 100 people register domains like alice.noot, bob.noot, etc. at $9.99 each — you earn ~$499.50 in royalties. Passively. Forever.

Example: Own .crypto → sell wallet.crypto, trade.crypto, pay.crypto → earn 50% of each sale.
